A protein skimmer, also known as a foam fractionator, is a device used in aquariums to remove organic compounds like uneaten food particles and fish waste residue from the water. The device works by injecting bubbles into the water, which attract proteins and other amino acids found in decomposing organic matter. Once attached to the bubbles, these proteins are easier to remove and flow over into the skimmer cup. Protein skimmers improve water quality, prevent aggressive algae growth, and lower phosphate levels, which increases oxygen and enhances light penetration for a brighter, cleaner, and clearer aquarium.
